Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I have to be Somali to use this site?
..No. But if you are tall, dark, and handsome (preferably skinny), and know how to handle an AK-47 rifle, application is open. Welcome :\
What does the word 'somali' mean?
According to the big G and the wiki
Somali is an active, intelligent, playful and curious longhaired cat breed with medium length coat, bushy tail and a ruff around the neck
Wow, I knew (we) somalis are intelligent AND beautiful. A bit too playful perhaps, but still intelligent. And why are these cats called 'somali'?, because they're exotic. So are we.
Does "somalism" equal to nationalism?
No, the word is just another 'ism' expressing the characteristic or origin of beíng a somali. You may see some people advocate for a Greater Somalia (idea known as Soomaali-weyn), whose policy is centred on the premise that all Somali-speaking people in the Horn of Africa should be incorporated into one larger state. But since this site is NOT politically themed, I'll let you decide what's good for the somali people. But whichever enclave you belong to, people, put down the gun (and the bakoorad, tooreyda, budhka, etc.), and pick up the book, will ya?.
Btw, nationalism is an erroneous concept in Islam, please read this editorial about the Prohibition of Nationalism in Islam
When i saw this peace, i felt deeply troubled with the name of this site, and I'm considering to abandon the term "somalism", not that I ever believed in nationalistic values, but the name is still misleading..

if you've any thoughts about this issue, I'd love to hear from you ..
What's with the blue and the white colors ?
I call this color scheme 'cirka iyo calanka', and if you ever observed the sky on a sunny day, you know what I'm talking about.
Personal opinions on somalism.com ?
Because this page may serve as a news page and as a source for factual information (i.e information that is verifiable by any other person with their sensory and reasoning faculties intact), somalism.com will be free of any personal viewpoints, except the articles, that is.
Do I have any viewpoints to share?
hmm.. let's see. I say: death is inevitable, but you might as well buckle your seatbelt. Globalization is evil, although it might make Gucci-and-macawis style look so fine. Mass media coverage of the Iraq war and occupation makes me sick, yet the Iraqi media is just as awful, that i rather watch Cigaal Shiidaad instead. Internal conflicts with external interventions don't look impressive, much less if you been fightin' (like us) for 15 years. Some presidents are considered straight dumb, as Napoleon said ""In politics, stupidity is not a handicap"". You should always assert your right to express yourself, being politically correct at the same time is just a bonus.
That's one good reason, Mr. president

For the curious mind

Is this page dynamic or just static html?
As you may know, appearances can be deceiving. As of October 2005, this site consists of 50 inter-linked html pages, including this URL (about.html). But there's a catch: none of these pages really exist on this server. When ever you visit a page, say "Wararka kubadda (news.uefa.html)", the server requests a page like "index.php?a=news&b=uefa" and you get a fresh content generated on-the-fly.
And what are the advantages?
  • You (the user) don't have to look at those nasty url's, as the queries get longer.
  • I don't need to fiddle with static html pages
  • The search-engines don't follow these dynamic addresses, i.e everything after the "?" is completely ignored. E.g Google will never get past index.php

..and how is it done?
Easy. The whole magic is done with the Apache module "mod_rewrite" to rewrite requested URLs on the fly, more on that here. But All you need is to create a file, and put these lines in it:
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^([0-9A-Za-z_.]+).html index.php?choice=news&page=$1
rename the file to ".htaccess", rename the variables ad hoc, and that should do it.
Whenever you enter somethin' like:
http://example.om/blabla.html
then it's rewritten to
http://example.om/index.php?choice=news&page=blabla
